Blade weapons are sword variants that appear in some entries in the Fire Emblem series.

Overview

Blade weapons were introduced in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War as an alternative to the standard Iron, Steel and Silver Sword series as weapons with increased might, but at the cost of increased weight and decreased accuracy. However, it became apparent that the sword users in that game tended to have more than enough Skill and Speed to render the drawbacks of the Blades effectively meaningless, and so in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, only the Iron Blade was included.

The Steel Blade and Silver Blade returned in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, and collectively, the Blade series of swords were consistent inclusions in the series through Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. In their later appearances, Blade weapons were rebalanced by increasing their weight further, as well as by making them less common to acquire. Radiant Dawn also introduced equivalent series of weapons for both lances and axes in Greatlances and Poleaxes respectively.

In Fire Emblem Engage, Blades, along with Greatlances and Greataxes, were reintroduced as Smash Weapons. Smash Weapons share universal traits, in that when a wielder initiates an attack, they always strike after the defender, and they cannot perform a follow-up attack. However, striking a unit with a Smash Weapon will knock that unit backward one space on the map.
