Profile

Jean is from Tea-Field Village and the son of its doctor, Sean. His mother, Anje, runs a tea shop there, and his older sister is a doctor in mainland Firene. He aspires to be a doctor like his father, and take over his clinic one day.

When Corrupted attack his village, a timely arrival by the Divine Dragon Alear inspires Jean to embark with them to aid them in their quest. Though his parents express their concerns, after seeing how resolute he is in his decision as well as Alear's permission to join, they ultimately let him leave.

Personality

Jean wants to become a splendid doctor like his father and looks up to him, taking his advice to heart. He can be stubborn, especially when expressing his desires to grow stronger and leave the village. Despite being one of the youngest members of Alear's forces, he is mature enough not to be spooked by typical things like ghosts.

In-Game

A doctor's son from Firene who works his hardest to save all the lives he can.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Jean is the Archetypal Kliff of the game, being a low level unit with exceptional growth rates. However, he is more similar to the Villager characters of some of the more recent titles. This is due to his Personal Skill, Expertise, which doubles the natural growth rate bonus added from his class growth bonuses. Jean is rather flexible as a result as he will naturally grow under whatever class he is put into and given focus to. To offset this, Jean's only strong natural growth is his Speed and HP as they hold 40% and 50% growths respectively and his Dexterity sits at 35%. All of his other stats except Build sit at either 20% or 25%.

Jean's starting class, Martial Monk, makes him the second earliest healer obtainable, but he is completely optional. He can heal and use Brawl weapons to Break ranged enemies, giving him options of healing or attacking. As a Qi Adept Battle Style unit, he can use the Chain Guard to soak the first attack received by an adjacent ally so long as his HP is at 100%, though he will take 5 damage when he guards an attack against his ally. His only Martial Monk rival is Framme, who may have had several chapters before he becomes available to gain some momentum, though Jean can quickly outpace her once he gets going. His promotions include Martial Master, which emphasizes more of the Brawl aspect of Martial Monk and its class skill Diffuse Healer allows Jean to heal adjacent allies by 50% of the HP he is healed when another ally heals him, spreading the recovery around. High Priest on the other hand gives him the strongest raw healing with a mastery of Staves and with higher Magic growths, he can also make usage of the ability to now use Tomes and can still Brawl for the sake of Breaking. With Self-Healing, Jean can heal himself in a pinch, rather than having to rely on an ally or another healing skill. If he changes into this class, he becomes a Mystical Battle Style, and thus his tome attacks ignore terrain bonuses on his foes.

Aside from his Martial Monk base, Jean can be a jack-of-all-trades to suit the player's role gaps in their roster as he will naturally mold and grow sufficiently in any class due to his personal skill. He can easily outperform allies in whatever role he is given on purely a stat level or have a much rounder growth pattern for consistency. Due to his personal skill giving him no real utility other than raw growths, Jean is heavily reliant on Emblem Rings and Skill Inheritance to further drive him in his role, which is also potentially a determent as he will compete with other users who, once given similar investments, can outperform him due to having a Personal skill with utility or combat performance.

Jean in a vacuum has the highest potential of any unit in the roster due to his high growths and will fit whatever role the player decides to take him in and will likely max out his stats before anyone else. However, while he can fit a role, Jean can slightly fall behind units in the later game due to the fact that they tend to have more focused kits or a Personal skill. For example, Jean is an exceptionally powerful healer in raw healing value, but Hortensia has better skills at her disposal that give her the slight edge. Jean is the most straightforward unit in the game as a result of this and his default class makes it easy to level him up without taking away valuable EXP from defeating foes from other allies, especially on higher difficulties where it can be pretty thin. He is a low-risk unit that quickly translates into a high-reward unit and can be used very seriously as a main team unit or can fill a void quickly.
