—Kurt to Skoll
Prince Kurt is the protagonist of Fire Emblem Shadows and the prince of Ast.
Profile
Kurt is the crown prince of the Kingdom of Ast, and the only child of the King but was forced to go on the run when the nation is invaded by an antagonistic empire. Kurt lives with a secret known to only her closest allies. Though she is presented as a man, she was born a girl. Due to the rules of royal succession in Ast, only male heirs are allowed to claim the throne, but Kurt has no siblings, and the act of a female heir openly claiming the throne would instigate a political incident. Thus, Kurt lives publicly as male in order to maintain position as the royal heir. Kurt's fiancée, Princess Rose of the neighboring kingdom of Holtz, is fully aware of this truth, but it has no impact on her love for her.
While escaping with allies, Kurt is confronted by Skoll, a servant of the goddess of shadow, Fenris, who tempts the prince to pledge loyalty to her, but Kurt initially refuses. Afterwards, Kurt begins to have recurring nightmares due to the influence of servants of shadows, in which she is either betrayed by one of her allies having made a pact with Fenris or herself making a pact and turning on her friends before being confronted again by Skoll and entices the prince to make a pact, but again she refuses and emboldens her determination with a heartfelt speech, to restore her kingdom her way, leaving Skoll no choice but to kill her. Though she wakes up the next morning with no wound, assuming it was a dream.
As the party make their way to Rose's kingdom, they are ambushed by a mercenary named Zasha, who captures Kurt and threatens to hand her over to the empire, as he blames Ast for the death of his sister, but her kind words reach Zasha and he relents, holding her to the promise of restoring their kingdom to their former glory, so he offers to become their scout. While doing so, Zasha inadvertently discovers Kurt's identity as a woman while bathing and begs him to keep it a secret, which he does. The group is surprised by the sudden arrival of princess Rose who offers to take the group through the hidden labyrinth under the castle, but along the way, they find themselves being followed by soldiers, which should not be possible as only certain people know of the passageway leading to the castle, to which Zasha deduces that someone must have given their enemies information about their location and concludes that they have a traitor among them.
While trying to uncover the traitor, Kurt attempts to take the blame for herself, believing that her dream may have indicated that she unintentionally formed a pact with Shadow during her interaction with Skoll. Gotthold, her retainer, rejects the idea, and repeats her meaningful speech to restore their kingdom, to which Kurt realizes that the only time she said that was in the dream and deduces that the encounter was real and that she was truly killed by Skoll, and concludes that Gotthold is the traitor, believing that he made a pact with Fenris to revive her, to which he concedes and admits to being the traitor.
Skoll and his sister Hati reveal themselves and confirm their suspicions and Hati commands Gotthold to kill his comrades. Gotthold is unable to resist and transforms into a demonic rhinoceros as he prepares to slaughter everyone. Gotthold manages to resist and turns on his pact for Kurt to slip away. Kurt promises to honor Gotthold's sacrifice as they make their way to the Kingdom of Holtz.
