Profile

Born Gustave Eddie Dominic, Gustave was a noble of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus who rose in ranks to become both the Baron Dominic and also a royal knight of King Lambert. During his time as Baron, Gustave married and had a daughter Annette. Gustave was not present during the events of the Tragedy of Duscur, an event that emotionally scarred him for failing to be there for his king when it mattered most. In the aftermath of the event, Gustave renounced his title of Baron out of personal shame to his older brother and abandoned his wife and daughter.

Gustave would wander for several years in his self-imposed exile, eventually finding employment in the Knights of Seiros, going under the alias Gilbert Pronislav. By Imperial Year 1180, he is among the strongest soldiers of the Knights and, much to his surprise, his daughter was accepted into the Officer's Academy. Despite her honest attempts to approach her father, Gustave continued to impose his self-isolation from her, much to her frustration.

Academy Phase

Gustave is tasked with accompanying Byleth's class to recover the stolen Lance of Ruin.

Gilbert, remaining with the Knights of Seiros, is first seen defending Garreg Mach, where he may be confronted by Annette. If Annette has been recruited and battles him, he states that he will kill her if she remains with the Empire. Despite his best efforts, he is eventually forced to retreat.

Gilbert does not reappear again until the Imperial Army besieges Fhirdiad, where he will defend the burning city with his life. If Annette was not recruited in the Academy phase, she will join him in the capital's defense. If she was recruited and battles him, she states that she will push him aside if need be, which he understands, before stating that it is a chastisement from the Goddess. He may be spared if the Immaculate One is defeated first, but his fate remains unknown.

During the five year timeskip, Gilbert had searched for Dimitri, whom he finds fighting bandits in a nearby town. Gilbert, alongside the reunited Blue Lions, rescue Dimitri and Byleth, the latter of whom had been missing for the last five years. With the unrest in Faerghus and having previously served under King Lambert, Gilbert pledges loyalty to Dimitri and assists him throughout his campaign against the Empire.

He primarily serves as an adviser, helping to guide Dimitri throughout the war. While at unease by Dimitri's initial unhinged behavior, he provides his support and alternatives to not only help Dimitri achieve his goals, but not act too rashly or recklessly on his initial quest for vengeance. By the end of the route, Dimitri is crowned King of Fódlan itself and Gilbert would continue to serve him. After he eventually retired from service, he would continue to contribute to his king by instructing the king's son.

Gilbert is given the opportunity to interact with his daughter Annette in this route. If their support is pursued, he reveals that during his self-imposed exile, he would always write letters for his wife and daughter on their important milestones, though his feelings of shame prevented him from actually sending them. He gives them to Annette in their B-Support and lets her decide what to do with them. In their final support, Annette sent the letters addressed to her mother and kept the ones for her. Annette forgives her father and requests that he returns home after the war. Gilbert agrees, having moved past his stubbornness. Should both survive the war, Gilbert follows through on his promise, moving back to Fhirdiad to live with his wife and daughter once more. He discards the name Gilbert and goes by his original name Gustave once more.

Paralogue

Should Annette be in the same army as Gilbert and the two have established a C-Support, Annette decides to visit her uncle in order to obtain the Heroes Relic of House Dominic, Crusher, in order to give their army a boost in power. Gilbert advises that she does not do this as House Dominic has sided with Cornelia and will likely not give it. Despite this, Annette decides to pursue the weapon anyways and Gilbert goes off with her to protect her, but asks Byleth and their army to wait outside just in case a fight happens. Just as he expected, his brother refuses to hand his niece the weapon and even threatens to capture her. Thanks to Byleth and their army, Lord Dominic is defeated, but left alive as the battle was merely a ploy to not only hand Crusher to Annette, but also protect his people from Cornelia's wrath. He promises to Gilbert to keep his wife safe while they continue their fight. Gilbert thanks Byleth in the aftermath of the battle and asks them to continue to protect his daughter.

If Annette joined the player's class during the Academy Phase, after Dimitri's death at the hands of Imperial soldiers in the aftermath of Chapter 17, she mentions that Gilbert was seen carrying his liege's body away from Gronder Field if spoken to at the monastery during Chapter 18. Gilbert himself does not appear during the battle or at all during the route, however.

In the aftermath of the skirmish in the Great Bridge of Myrddin, Gilbert arrives to talk with Byleth and Seteth. He asks whether they could allow troops from the Kingdom to pass through in order to invade the Empire and whether the Church of Seiros are willing to join forces for the invasion. No matter what Byleth says, Seteth refuses to join forces with the Kingdom as he would rather allow the Church time to recover their troops and resources, but allows Gilbert and the Kingdom troops to pass the bridge. Later on, Church soldiers report to Byleth and Seteth regarding the aftermath of the three-way battle on Gronder Field, and that Gilbert is among the fallen alongside Dimitri. If Annette was recruited into the Black Eagles, she mourns her father's death.

Personality

Gilbert is serious and polite, maintaining an aura of calm and his expressions do not change much. He is private in his affairs and past, making him seem distant to everyone. However, his prowess makes him both a highly respected knight and a source of great wisdom. Deep down, he is a stalwart, honest, and loyal knight, having served under King Lambert for years. The Tragedy of Duscur changed him as he was left with the deepest shame for his failure to be there for his king. His regrets made him stubborn and abandoned everything he had built in his life because of his feelings of unworthiness.

At the present, he maintains a similar level of respect and reverence as a member of the Knights of Seiros, though his distance makes him hard to approach. However, he is willing to tutor the young students of the Officer's academy, even counseling Ashe in the War Phase of the principles of a knight to help his achieve his dream. Likewise he expresses gratitude and admiration in others, especially Dedue for his valiant actions between the phases of Three Houses.

His time in the academy allowed him to acquaint himself with King Lambert's son Dimitri, whom he would eventually take on the role of guardian and protector during the War Phase in all routes. The Azure Moon route in particular showcases his wisdom when handling Dimitri's vengeful nature, subtly guiding his rage in a productive manner that satiates his bloodlust, but also guides onto a path that will serve Faerghus for the better. Eventually Dimitri is able to return to his former self and Gilbert continues to council the young prince and remained a steadfast knight in service of the new King. However, in other routes, he dies protecting Dimitri, though his efforts would be for naught as Dimitri dies in them as well.

Even though he keeps a distant front from Annette, he still loves his wife and daughter. From the very moment he went into his self-imposed exile, he never forgot about them and carried them close to his heart. This lead him to write letters to them, but never could bring himself to send any of them. Every important event and milestone was meticulously accounted for in his letters and only upon the War Phase could he have the chance to give it to Annette in the Azure Moon route at her insistence to reach out to him. By the end of their Support chain, Gilbert finally resolves himself to return home and does so in their shared ending.

Recruitment

During the War Phase, Gilbert will automatically join the player's army on the third turn during Chapter 13 in Azure Moon. Gilbert cannot be recruited whatsoever in any other route nor during the Academy Phase.

Overall

Secret Book (Artwork)
Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Gilbert serves as a powerful physical tank, having high Defense, Strength and HP, as well as reasonable Dexterity. He essentially replaces Dedue as the latter is unavailable when Gilbert is recruited during Azure Moon, and if Dedue's paralogue was not completed, is the only natural Armor Knight available within the Blue Lions. His personal skill further improves his durability by reducing incoming damage by 2 as long as he has a battalion. All of his other growths are low, however, especially his Luck and Resistance, so he will be easy prey for enemy mages and can often find himself on the receiving end of criticals. His starting Speed is also comically low, meaning he will almost always get doubled by the enemy's attacks. One could remedy this to an extent by promoting him into a Paladin for the stat boost, but it is very unlikely he will grow enough to fix his sluggishness.

Gilbert starts as a Fortress Knight, and his skill strengths mean that promoting him to Great Knight is the ideal path. He has no skill weaknesses, but his low Magic and limited spell list mean any magic-based classes are not advised. Due to how he only joins after Chapter 12, and most of his skills start at E rank, it is difficult to get him to any other classes besides Great Knight, though certainly not impossible. Great Knight, however, isn't considered very good due to having multiple weaknesses (Armored and Cavalry) and lacking Weight -5, so keeping Gilbert as a Fortress Knight is entirely viable. Paladin can be a reasonable class to switch him to as well in order to get Aegis, helping to protect him against magic attacks. Downgrading him temporarily to Brigand or Armored Knight can also be worthwhile to obtain Death Blow and Armored Blow respectively, though changing him to a Cavalier for Desperation is not worthwhile due to his terrible Speed. If one wishes to go outside the box on his classes, then Wyvern Rider and Wyvern Lord can be acceptable classes for him, though he is neutral toward Flying and the classes won't compensate for his Speed either. His bad Speed is less of a problem on Maddening difficulty, where there will be several enemies that even faster characters like Felix or Petra cannot outrun; in this case, Gilbert's higher Defense can compensate against speedier opponents, who will still double-attack him regardless.

Depending on player investment, he could take the time increase his Brawling proficiency and become a War Master as well since his Axe affinity is high enough that it needs only a little more training to meet the requirement. Even though the class is not an entirely perfect fit, it provides Quick Riposte upon mastery which is an alternative method to give him a means to perform follow-up attacks so long as his Health is over 50% when an enemy initiates on him. Quick Riposte will also protect him from being doubled by enemy attacks, making him much harder to bring down. Training in Brawl will also unlock the Healing Focus Combat Art, which can greatly help with his sustainability.

Overall, Gilbert makes for an excellent physical wall thanks to his stats and his personal skill, but needs to be kept away from enemy mages. His specialization in slow but sturdy defense is somewhat niche, but few others can do the job as well as he can.

Gilbert - Veteran Patriot
Gilbert returned to Fhirdiad and resumed his duty as a knight, faithfully serving King Dimitri for many years. When he finally retired, it is said he spent the rest of his days coaching the young prince in the art of combat.
Gilbert and Byleth
When Byleth took on the role of archbishop in Rhea's place, he/she devoted himself/herself to official business as the new leader of the Church of Seiros. Reaching an agreement with the Kingdom, he/she worked tirelessly on the restoration and development of all of Fódlan. Behind his/her achievements was the knight Gustave, formerly known as Gilbert of the Knights of Seiros, who remained always by the archbishop's side. Byleth came to rely on Gustave for nearly everything. It is said that he/she continued to call upon Gustave for instruction and advice well into his retirement.
Gilbert and Dimitri
Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. At his side was the knight, Gustave, who had discarded the name of Gilbert and reaffirmed his oath of fealty to the royal family. After many more years of service, in which the trust between them grew and never wavered, Gustave finally wished to retire. Though he bristled slightly at Dimitri's request to look after and tutor the young prince, it is said that Gustave took on that duty with due patience and solemnity for the remainder of his life.
Gilbert and Annette
Gustave discarded the name of Gilbert and reaffirmed his oath of fealty to King Dimitri and the royal family. After returning to Fhirdiad, he reunited with his wife, who had returned to live with Baron Dominic, and his beloved daughter, Annette, who had begun teaching at the capital's school of sorcery. Though it was initially an awkward reunion, over time the family rekindled their love for one another. As the shadow of war receded from the Kingdom, the three spent their days happily making up for lost time.

Etymology

Gilbert is a given name of Norman-French origin, derived from Germanic Gisilberht or Gisalberht. The first element, Gil-, comes from Germanic gīsil, meaning "shaft of an arrow" or gisal "pledge, hostage", while the second element, -bert comes from Germanic -behrt, short form of beraht, meaning "bright" or "famous".

Gustave is a common male given name of likely Old Swedish origin used in the Nordic countries, possibly meaning "staff of the Geats or Goths or gods", derived from the Old Norse elements Gautr ("Geats"), Gutar/Gotar ("Goths"), goð ōs ("gods") and the word stafr ("staff"). It is also a common name for Swedish monarchs since the reign of Gustav Vasa, borne by eight Kings, including current king, Carl XVI Gustaf. Eddie is a diminutive of Edward, an English name meaning "rich guard". Dominic derives from the Latin name Dominicus, meaing "of the Lord".
