How does the Knight class compensate for its low movement in Fire Emblem? toggle section
In Fire Emblem, the Knight class offsets its low movement with robust physical stats. As armored units, Knights are susceptible to bonus damage from certain weapons, yet they boast unmatched defense. They can use Lances and Swords, enhancing their adaptability. In specific versions like Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Knights can advance to the Great Knight class, capable of wielding Swords, Lances, and Axes.

What makes the Knight class in Fire Emblem vulnerable despite their heavy armor? toggle section
Knights in Fire Emblem, despite their heavy armor, have vulnerabilities. Their low Resistance leaves them open to magic-based attacks. Their limited Movement can also hinder their battlefield effectiveness. As armored units, they're susceptible to bonus damage from specific weapons like Armorslayers and Hammers. However, at Level 10 and above, they can learn the Natural Cover skill, reducing damage on challenging terrain.

Overview

Knights are one of many longstanding classes in the Fire Emblem franchise that debuted in the original Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. It is noted for being the template for the Armored Unit status that has persisted in the series.

Combat

Due to their heavy armor, Knights tend to focus on being one of the most physically resilient classes due to its emphasis on high HP and Defense, making them effective physical walls in maps. While unmatched in physical bulk, many Knights may also have moderate Strength, allowing them to return damage to units who engage against them, and Skill/Dexterity for accuracy purposes. Knights are primarily used as physical barriers for both player and enemy alike. Many use knights for defensive purposes, allowing enemies to engage on them and weather attacks, possibly softening them, and setting up attacks for the player's turns. It is not uncommon to find them used by enemies as literal road blocks on maps that require the player to engage and break through them in order to progress forward on a map as they block corridors and entrances into larger areas.

In most games, Knights are lance-wielding units, though some games feature variants that wield a different weapon, such as axes, swords, or bows.

To compensate for their massive physical bulk, Knights have low speed and often have an average resistance stat, making them more vulnerable to Mage units or Tome users in general. While their high HP and occasionally decent resistance can help mitigate one attack from a Mage unit, they are far likelier to fall to them in less combat rounds than against most physical units. Their heavy armor also hinders their mobility, usually having among the lowest Speed stats in the game, making them susceptible to Follow-Up Attacks. Against most physical units, this is mostly moot other than faster weapon degradation for player weapons. However, this further exasperates their inherent weakness to Magic attacks as they will usually suffer heavy damage. It also gives them among the lowest Movement of all classes, usually restricted to usually 4 or 5 tiles.

Though physically resilient, there are weapons that deal effective damage to the Knight's heavy armor. The two common weapons are the Armorslayer and the Hammer, which are purchasable weapons for Sword and Axe units. Due to the somewhat abundance of Knights in early game maps, especially for Boss characters of a map, the Lord character is usually given a weapon that deals effective damage against Knights (and Cavaliers) that only they can wield. Most sword wielding Lords have the Rapier, though there are other weapons like the Mani Katti, Reginleif, and Thani.

Promotion

The General is the standard promotion for Knights in most games, which tend to follow the same trends for the Knight class, though with higher focus and specialization in their strengths. In games that allow Branch Promotions, the Great Knight is its other promotion, allowing better mobility in exchange for overall bulk compared to the General.

In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Knights are not able to class change, despite the General class already existing at the time.

In Fire Emblem Gaiden, they are a second-tier class that promotes from Soldiers that in turn can promote into Barons, which takes the place of General.

In Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, it is one of the Promotion options for Amelia from her Recruit class.

In TearRing Saga, one Knight, Billford, promotes to General, while the other playable knight, Norton, promotes to Iron Knight.

History in the Series

Knights appear across the Fire Emblem series. Knights are generally hampered by low Movement and compensate for this with their good physical stats across the board, and typically high Defense. They are one of few classes that count as armored units, which leaves them vulnerable to bonus damage from weapons such as Armorslayers and Hammers.

In their original inception in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Armor Knights are, as described above, units with high defense and lower than average movement. They are capable of wielding lances and swords. A similar, more powerful class called the General also appears in the game, but Armor Knights are unable to promote in this title.

In Fire Emblem Gaiden, the Knight is simply known as the Armor and serves as the second tier of the Soldier line. Armors are able to further promote into the third tier Baron when the necessary requirements are met.

In Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, the Amor Knight is able to promote into the General class.

In the Jugdral Series, the Armored Knight class appears in four different varieties, each defined by the weapon type they wield: the lance-wielding Armor, Axe Armor, the Sword Armor, and the Bow Armor. All four versions of the class can promote into the General class, though not every Knight variant is playable in both Jugdral titles.

From Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade to Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, the Armor Knight, localized as Knight in these titles, is restricted to wielding lances. The Knight primarily promotes into General, although the branched promotion system in The Sacred Stones further gives them the option to promote into Great Knight. In The Binding Blade, Gwendolyn is credited as being the first female Knight to appear in the series.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn splits the Armor Knight class into three variants: Lance Armor, Sword Armor, and Axe Amor. Each variant promotes into a varian t of the General class that specializes in that same weapon type (i.e.: Lance General, Sword General, and Axe General). Unusual for the class, Armor Knights in Radiant Dawn possess higher resistance than most physical classes.

In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, there is again only a single lance-wielding Knight class. Unlike in the original Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, the class is able to promote into General in this remake.

In Fire Emblem Awakening, the Knight class, similar to its appearance in The Sacred Stones, is given the additional option to promote into the Great Knight class. In this entry, the class's Resistance is also lower, similar to its appearances prior to Radiant Dawn.

In Fire Emblem Fates, the Knight class is treated as a Nohrian class. Its Hoshidan counterpart is the Spear Fighter class.

Knights are called "Armored Knights" in the localized version of Three Houses. To become an Armored Knight, a unit must be at least Lv. 10 and have an Axe Skill Level of C or higher and a Heavy Armor Skill Level of D or higher, and an Intermediate Seal must be expended in order to take the Certification Exam. While this title doesn't have weapon-locked classes, allowing Armored Knights flexible weapon loadouts, they do have a primary skill point bonus in Axes (+2) and a secondary (+1) in Lances.

In Fire Emblem Engage, Armor Knights again appear in weapon-specific variants of Lance Armor, Axe Armor, and Sword Armor, and can promote into General. As armored units, they are immune to the Break status introduced in this game. Compared to other games, their resistance stat is notably lower even compared to other non magic base classes.

In Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, Armor Knights use only axes. The playable Knight, Draug the Mirage, promotes to either General or Berserker. Enemy Knights appear as Ironclad Knight in Illusory Daitou TV and the stronger variant Regal Knight in Illusory Daiba Studio.

In Fire Emblem Warriors, Knights are an enemy only class that use lances. This game is the first Fire Emblem, spin-off or otherwise, in which Armor Knights do not make a playable appearance. Knights are depicted similar to their Nohrian appearance in Fates, and Warriors also introduces a Hoshidan form of the Knight referred to as Armored Knight.

In Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Armored Knights are an axe-wielding armored class. They are a part of the Fighter class tree.

In the mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes, generic Armor Knights appear as enemies like all classes within the game, and appear as their Lance, Axe, and Sword Armor variants. While no player unit has a defined class, characters who are Armor Knights in their home games such as Draug or Effie have appearances and stats that correspond to the traditional concepts of an Armor Knight unit.

Other Games

In TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga, the Armor Knight class, depending on the character in question, either promote into the General class or the mounted Iron Knight class. Armor Knight and its promotions use swords exclusively.

In TearRing Saga: Berwick Saga, the Armor Knight is an ax-wielding class that can use Large Shields and serves as the only Armor group class the player has access to. Although its sole playable member Derrick cannot promote, the enemy-only Gigas Knight is essentially an upgraded version of the class. It lacks the ability to equip Large Shields but has higher stats across the board and exclusive access to the Gigas Axe, which grants a massive boost to their defense stat.

In Vestaria Saga I, the Knight is known as the Guardian. The class wields lances and throwing spears. It can promote into the Grand Guard. Two variants of the class were introduced in The Holy Sword of Silvanister, one that wields swords and one that wields axes.

Uniform

A Knight of Begnion in Radiant Dawn.

Regardless of the game or the type of weapon that the Knight class employs, the attire that they are outfitted with is standardized: Bulky, cumbersome pauldrons, a mostly armored body usually alongside a shield that is either half or equal to their in-game height. The style and bulkiness of the armor that they wear does, however, vary across the series; Knights hailing from Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Mystery of the Emblem and Awakening sport shoulder armor that resembles cauldrons used for brewing and cooking, while Knights in all other titles are uniformly dressed in armor that snugly fits each individual character's body type.

In many games, Knights have less armor around their waist, elbows and the back of their knees, presumably so as not to restrict their movement in those areas. Knights usually wear a close helmet, thus obscuring most of their face. There are only a few exceptions in the series. In TearRing Saga, all knights forego a helmet, while in Awakening and Fates, their shoulder armor forms a "hood" which covers their face.

In titles that feature Knights specializing in different weapons (Sword Armor, Bow Armor, etc.), the designs may slightly differ to allow for differentiation to be easily observed even when they do not have any weapons equipped.
