Trainee is a classification of certain Classes throughout the Fire Emblem series.
Overview
Trainee classes are a series of classes in some Fire Emblem games denoting a relatively inexperienced combat character. They may, for example, be a Villager who is suddenly thrust into war and join the main protagonist's cause without any prior combat training or experience. Other times, they are young recruits who are at the very beginning of their military careers.
These trainee classes are typically regarded as below base classes in the class promotion tiers. Trainee classes generally offer little to no long-term growth potential, and the player is encouraged to promote characters in trainee classes out of them as soon as possible.
In most games in which trainee classes appear, there are only a small number of units that appear in such classes as their default. Examples include Donnel in Fire Emblem Awakening being the only first-generation character that begins in the Villager class, and whose sons will inherit the class from him. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones features three characters that begin as trainees in Ross, Amelia, and Ewan. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the lone game in which every character has access to the Trainee tier of classes, either being a Noble or a Commoner, though only Byleth, Cyril and the Officers Academy student characters begins in these classes.

Trainee classes are often associated with the fan-defined Kliff Archetype. Such units begin with poor starting stats, but are able to overcome this thanks to above-average growth rates, denoting a hidden potential that emerges over the course of the war. This often leads to such units becoming some of the statistically strongest in the player's hands if they devote resources to fostering their growths.
