Profile

Rune is a boy from Ásgarðr who has the unique ability to decipher ancient runes that tell of the beginning of creation. In his study of these runes, he inadvertently comes across the Twilit Runes, and rushes to tell Alfaðör about them. However, in response Alfaðör ordered his imprisonment, and Rune flees to Midgard and Askr, where he finds protection with the Order of Heroes.

Book IX

Coming to their group, right after they repel Thorr and Loki a short while after defeating Læraðr and his Healing Hands, Alfonse, Sharena and Anna take Rune to one of Askr's bastions for refuge where he explains why Alfaðör is after him which Alfonse suspects something else is going on.

Book IX ends with the defeat and death of Alfaðör, Rune thanks the Order of Heroes for saving him. Alfonse is bothered by several cryptic hints left by Loki throughout Book IX, namely that she never once betrayed her master despite the fact that she was directly opposing Alfaðör. Additionally, only the creator of the realms have the ability to read the Twilit Runes, which Alfaðör could not, despite claiming to be the creator. Alfonse deduces Rune's true identity as the real Alfaðör, much to Rune's delight.

Having grown fond of the Order of Heroes, watching them through all nine Books of Heroes, Rune expresses a wish to see further triumphs over the greatest challenge he can do. Rune decides to instigate Ragnarök, an apocalyptic event that may destroy all of the Nine Realms.

Rune informs the Order that Ragnarök will have three stages: the winter of annihilation, the wolf of annihilation, and the sword of annihilation. Despite starting the apocalypse, Rune genuinely wishes the Order of Heroes luck against the challenge and believes they will find a way to overcome it. He orders Thórr to send them back to Askr to finish their preparations as the winter of annihilation has begun on the lowest layer of the Nine Realms.

Personality

Rune is a shy and timid boy due to having been weak since he was little and never went outside much. The only comfort he felt was from the legendary stories he read.

The personality of "Rune" is an elaborate facade. In truth, as the real Alfaðör, he is cunning, manipulative, and able to fool others, both among his enemies and his ostensible allies, while a fake Alfaðör sits upon the throne of Ásgarðr. He is also playful and sadistic, as he had a hand in tragic events in every Book in the story leading up through Book IX for little reason other than wanting to get entertainment from mortals.

Despite all this, Rune is genuinely friendly to the Order of Heroes and grew fond of them watching over the events of Books I through IX, stating that they are just like the fairy tales and legends he grew to admire. Though he considers Humans as his weakest creations, the Order of Heroes' successes left a strong impression on his opinion of them. Even though he started Ragnarök purely for his own amusement, he genuinely believes that the Order of Heroes may actually be able to overcome his greatest challenge for the sake of the Nine Realms.
