Mustafa is a boss character in Fire Emblem Awakening. He is a Plegian soldier forced to fight to protect his family.

Profile

Mustafa is a reputable general within the Plegian army and was among many present at Plegia Castle to witness Exalt Emmeryn sacrifice herself. Her words of peace resonated within the general's heart, but nonetheless was ordered by Gangrel to intercept the Shepherds from escaping Plegia. Mustafa awaited their inevitable arrival at the Midmire. While waiting, Mustafa noticed a cloaked woman escorting a series of carriages. He conversed with the woman and deduced that the carriages would be for the Shepherds. Despite his duty, Mustafa chose to turn a blind eye in lieu of his conflicting feelings.

In Chapter 10, Chrom leads his forces to the Midmire as Mustafa had expected. He immediately calls out to Chrom, telling him that if the Shepherds lay their weapons down and surrender peacefully, he would protect them as best as he could. As expected, Chrom and the Shepherds refuse, leading to a clash. Throughout the battle, many of Mustafa's forces echoed the general's sentiments of avoiding needless bloodshed. Mustafa assured them that he would not follow the law of death for insubordination, understanding their emotions running through their minds, much like his. He even offered to shoulder the blame for their desertion should they decide to. When questioned why he did not flee himself, Mustafa reveals that his wife and son would be put at risk should he desert his position. His humanity inspired his men to fight on, not out of respect to the Mad-King Gangrel, but from sheer reverence to Mustafa. Mustafa fights until the bitter end, but eventually falls. In his death throes, he pleads for the Shepherds to spare his remaining men.

Mustafa got along well with Henry; in his supports with Ricken, Henry mentions that Mustafa always gave him a bag of peaches whenever he visited. Henry reminded him of his son, and Mustafa told him that he considered him a part of his family.

Personality

Contrary to most of the Plegian army elite, Mustafa is an honorable man and among the many who were affected by Emmeryn's words prior to her sacrifice. Mustafa holds great love for his wife and son; thus, he willingly fights to the death against Ylisse despite having no issue with the country, as he knew Gangrel would have his family killed if he tried to leave.

He also allowed any of his men to desert their post and was well respected as his men were willing to also fight for him despite the losing battle they would face against Chrom and the Shepherds. In his final moments, Mustafa bears no ill will towards Ylisse, understanding it was Gangrel that forced him to sacrifice his life, and makes a last request to spare his surviving soldiers, displaying a selfless desire to stop further avoidable bloodshed at the expense of a hated mad king.

Plegian Champion Mustafa
	Look at those rugged features and rippling muscles! This is Mustafa, and he looks like someone who can get the job done, that's for sure!
	Mustafa's a self-made man who serves as a general in the Plegian army. He doesn't care for needless fighting, and his thoughtful nature has endeared him to many of his subordinates.
	However, after being coerced into following Gangrel's cruel orders lest his family come to harm, he found himself reluctantly crossing swords with Prince Chrom of Ylisse...
	Mustafa fell during that battle, his final words a plea for Chrom to spare his men. I'm glad he gets a second chance here in Askr, and I hope he continues to strive for the justice he believes in!

Etymology

Mustafa (مصطفى) is a common Arabic name, which means 'chosen one'. It is derived from 'Istafa' (to choose, favor). It was popularized by its usage as an epithet of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

Trivia

• According to Ricken and Henry's B support, Mustafa would give Henry peaches whenever the latter visited him, on account of Henry reminding him of his son, and considered him part of his family.
  • In the second Awakening Drama CD, a Plegian soldier refers to Henry as "Mustafa's little bootlicker," indicating that Henry was at least somewhat fond of Mustafa as well.
• When clicking his description on the bottom screen, Mustafa is described as a pacifist, similar to Emmeryn.
• Mustafa shares the same voice clips with Yen'fay and Ignatius in both English and Japanese languages of Awakening.
  • Although Mustafa didn't have voice clips of his own, Kenji Hamada reprises his role as Mustafa in the Japanese version of Heroes.
• Before his appearance as an actual hero, Mustafa made a cameo appearance in Heroes as part of the The Martyr Exalt Lost Lore event.
• Mustafa is one of the few bosses in Awakening to not have his sprite reused by another boss.
  • Although his model in battle uses a generic Berserker, rather than a unique one of his own.
• Mustafa's artwork in Heroes depicts him wielding a Short Axe, his weapon of choice when fought in Awakening, despite that Short Axes are thus far not present in Heroes at all. In gameplay, Mustafa instead wields a Barrier Axe by default, but can be equipped with any inheritable Axe in the game should the player desire.
