The Wait Command, as seen in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Wait is a battle command in the Fire Emblem series.
Overview
Wait is a default command available to all units and is a state all playable characters can enter after performing any Player Phase actions. By choosing the 'Wait' command in a character's action menu, the character will immediately go into standby. Characters in this state typically visually turn gray and do not animate. A character in this state cannot act for the remainder of the turn unless their action is refreshed via Dancing. Units may move before they Wait.
Any and all other interaction-based commands such as Attacking, Healing, and Talking will put the unit into the Wait status after completing their actions. If a character changes their equipped weapon within their own inventory, this usually does not force a Wait state. Transferring a Rescued or Pair Up unit to another character only puts the character acting on the command into Wait and not the receiving unit. However, if the unit drops off a rescued unit or ends a pair up without transferring their partner to another unit, both units involved will be put in the Wait standby state.
A unit's actions will immediately end and they will be forced into a standby state if they are hit by certain hazards, run into an enemy that was obscured by Fog of War, or trigger certain unique map conditions.
Use of the End Turn option within the map menu effectively puts all still-active units into a standby state as the turn's Player Phase ends. If the player has an Auto-Battle set-up that executes a certain strategy, the game automatically performs said auto-battle functions before putting all remaining characters into Wait. Likewise, once all of the deployed player-controlled characters are put into Wait, the player can no longer perform any actions and must End Turn. In some games, this automatically triggers the End Turn function.
Non-Canon Appearances
In the WarioWare Gold microgame Fire Emblem Awakening, the player sometimes has to use the Wait command.
